Gender representation
Week 1 - Task 1
I think the main reasons for the lack of equality to women is because children are mainly attracted to action type genres of video games. Men are stereotypically ‘muscly’ or ‘butch’ where as women aren’t usually classed as ‘muscly’ or ‘butch’. In the popular video games the person playing would prefer to pick the most masculine man rather than a female. However, in a video game where the main protagonist is a female, such as Lara Croft, would be seen as thin with hardly any muscle, wearing short shorts or short t-shirts. However, some female characters in video games such as Super Mario for example the female characters are seen as ‘damsels in distress’ and need rescuing.
Week 2 - Task 2
-Women are only viewed as the stereotypical ‘woman’.
-Women need to be recognised for so much more than housewives in Hollywood movies.
-Women are judged on how pretty or skinny they are, if they aren’t skinny or pretty they aren’t the stereotypical Hollywood woman.
-Male and Female genders are determine what we can and can’t do through out the Hollywood movie industry.
-Women aren’t shown as the higher roles in movies whereas men are.
Week 3 - Task 3
A patriarchal society is a social system in which males hold primary power and predominate in roles of political leadership, moral authority, social privilege and control of property.
I believe that we don’t live in a patriarchal society because women have much more equal rights to men than they did 50+years ago. Women can also be the head of a business, home etc. proving that we no longer live in a patriarchal society, however some people do still believe in that.
Week 4 - Task 4
Judith Butler shows that she strongly believes that genders are just a role we play in society. She uses strong points as tow why gender is just a label but I believe that we have been male or female for the whole time we have been alive so why should we just forgot about our very nature? However Judith strongly does believe that gendersa re just labels and we can change them if we wanted too,
Week 5 - Task 5
In terms of gender representation the media can try to cover up more women, with their bodies as women are usually seen in tight or hardly any clothing in magazines, social media etc. Also giving plus sized women a more confident voice. Also showing women aren’t just house-wives etc but can be much much more.
