Charting the history of British music video Matthew Smith
Exploring the article
1. According to the article, MTV was not as significant in Britain as it was in America. British labels started to commission videos between 1975 and 1980 way before MTV started to.
2. The criteria Emily Caston and her team used was asking the industry panel about works they considered to be landmarks in the development of the form of music video in the uk, both technically and creatively. I however would judge the songs on their popularity and how they changed the music industry into the one we have today. This would include Bohemian Rhapsody, Thriller, Take on me and life on mars.
3. The reason the article says Bohemian Rhapsody is not the first British music video is because a year before Bohemian Rhapsody was released, the rolling stones released 'it's only Rock'n'roll (but I like it) and in 1982-3, David Bowie released 'John, I'm only dancing', 'The Jean Genie' and 'Life on Mars'. The reason Bohemian Rhapsody was not featured on the boxset however is because Queen would not let them use it unless it was the first song on the boxset which the makers disagreed with.
4. The six categories I would use if I was making the dvd boxset would be Popularity, Style, Lyric, Animation, Story and Wit.
5. The significance of a curated collection is useful for people to find the right type of music for their different tastes without have to look for themselves. They can also find music with a similar vibe which they might enjoy as well.
Curating your own collection
1. David Guetta - Titanium ft Sia:
The music video focuses on a boy with powers who leaves his school, steals a bike and tries to get away from everything. The music video gives the viewer a relatable feeling of just wanting getting away from everything that causes stress and unhappiness. This is why I found the song relatable when I first joined high school as It was very stressful and I felt like hiding away from it all sometimes and wishing I had the power to make all my problems disappear.
2. Twenty one pilots - Stressed Out
The music video is about two young men wishing they were kids again because there were no responsibilities and they didn't worry about what people thought of them. This is shown by them riding their bikes, going to each others houses and just being themselves around each other. This is what I was feeling like in my second year of school wishing I didn't have so many responsibilities and that I didn't care what other people thought of me.
3. The Weekend - Starboy
The music video doesn't really have a plot but it has a 80 neon feel to it which at the time I was getting into.
4. Ed Sheeran - Castle On The Hill
The music video is about the time in your life when you wish you had appreciated the time where things were simpler than they are now and where you were at your happiest. This song inspired me to make the most out of my school days as once they are over, all you have are memories.
5. The Weekend - Blinding Lights
This music video has an 80s vibe like Starboy which again is why I like the song so much. The use of synthesizers and neon lighting help put this across.
