Stereotypes Matthew Smith

A stereotype is a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. The very first people who told us about stereotypes would've been our parents or guardians as they are our first influential teachers. We can also pick up stereotypes in the media and from significant others.

Stereotypes are used to label people and place them in different categories depending on what their personalities and intellect are perceived to be. This is why stereotypes are so negative and damaging towards people. People should have a choice to be what they want to be, look how they want to look and strive to achieve what they want to in life.

Stereotypes are not accurate at all as nobody should have to act or look a certain way. This is why they are so toxic and upsetting towards people. Everybody should have the freedom to be themselves and not conform to an ideology just to fit into society.

The media can create stereotypes as well as challenge them. Racial stereotypes are often created or reinforced by the media which is very harmful. This can be very dangerous towards teenagers as well as it can influence them to share the same racial stereotypes causing the harm and upset of other people. Women are also stereotyped in the media with advertising still reinforcing the patriarchal stereotype with men being at the top and women being at the bottom of power. Some advertisements however challenge these stereotypes and give women the equality they deserve. An example would be the this girl can advertisements which show all women striving to be their best no matter their race or ability.

One media theory which is linked to stereotypes is the Male gaze theory. The Male gaze theory is when men see women as nothing more as sexual objects. This theory can be applied to advertisements and films as this is where they most appear. I agree with this theory as women should not just be seen in that light as it is another stereotype that can cause harm and upset.
