Gender Representation Kayla

Task 1: I believe that women in video games are used to show how handsome or heroic the male is by playing the damsel in distress or simply pining over his looks and charms. Due to society and the way they picture females, our characters are never often seen as 'powerful' or able to achieve the same as what men can. With the obvious body differences we are separated into a different category and almost treated like a different species. In the past we were seen as the secondary gender and as of recently that has changed- most people are not adjusting so they turn to their old ways and hope it sells to those who believe men are stronger and better than women. Gender stereotypes have corrupted the gaming industry with their petty ideas of what a hero or a powerful character should look like. Gender Representation Homework-Task 1 Video Games

I think that one of the main reasons that there is a lack of equality is that the most popular game very likely will feature a set of characters that are mainly male. As action is the best-selling game, the stereotypical strong, muscly action-man protagonist will often make an appearance and is usually the character that is picked by the player because they seem 'butch' and 'masculine'.  In the occasion that a female is the main protagonist (such as Lara Croft), they will either be dressed in something quite revealing or a tight bodysuit. These are usually characters from action and shooter games; however, in games such as Super Mario, the female characters aren't featured a lot and are represented as helpless- which is when the male character swoops in to save her.
